1000-Mile Walk for My Granddaughter
September 12, 2012
Grandmother, aged 62, is walking 1000 miles for her granddaughter with Down syndrome (DS). Kathy Coughlin of Boca Raton Florida is taking a virtual walk from her home in Boca Raton, Florida up to her granddaughter’s home in Baltimore, Maryland, which is a little over 1000 miles. She is doing this to raise awareness and money for all people with Down syndrome and in honor of her 5year old granddaughter, Amara. The virtual walk started July 11, 2012, she has averaged 15 miles a day and has walked over 760 miles so far to her final destination in Baltimore.
Ms. Coughlin has been thinking for several years how she can become a bigger part of her granddaughter’s life and made a decision this year to go on this 1000-mile walk. The venue she has chosen is to link her walk with the annual Palm Beach County Buddy Walk in October. October is the national DS awareness month and the buddy walk for the Gold Coast DS Organization in Palm Beach County is October 21, 2012.
To document her walk and share her experience, she has started a blog and created a team through Gold Coast DS Organization for donations. Her goal is to arrive at Amara’s house on or before the Buddy Walk on October 21st. Although this is a virtual walk, the steps are very real.
